Monterey, CA -- Thanks to an innovative new concept in the
multi-media tourism, you can now watch scenes of movies filmed on the
Monterey Peninsula and see the actual location, while seated in a luxury
motorcoach.
The brainchild of Monterey native Doug Lumsden, who also operates
Monterey Bay Scenic Tours, this is the first of its kind on the
continental US.
Tours typically last 2-1/2 hours and include location from films like
Play Misty for Me (1971), Turner & Hooch (1989), A Summer Place (1959),
A Clash by Night (1952), Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), Rebecca
(1940), and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935).
Small overhead monitors play appropriate scenes as the 32-seat coach
passes by the locale. Lumsden narrates, drives, parks, answers
questions, cues up the film clips, and leads group sing-and he does this
7 days a week.
The concept really works, although it must perplex observers
outside--seeing a busload of tourists fixated on something inside the
vehicle while they pass by some of the most stunning scenery in the
world.
Highlights of the maiden voyage included a scene from local favorite
Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me. As the bus turns the corner near The
Sardine Factory restaurant, simultaneous views of the stop sign passing
by evoked oohs and ahs from the riders.
Nearly 200 films have been made on the Peninsula since 18907, and
Lumsden worked closely with the Monterey County Film Commission while
planning the tour. Say Greg Robinson, executive director of the
commission, "Filmmakers have been drawn to Monterey County locations for
decades, finding our locations the perfect backdrop for their shots."
